20 early warning signs your body may be fighting cancer

Inflammatory breast cancer presents differently from the classic lump: it can cause redness, swelling, or changes in nipple appearance such as flattening or inversion. Sudden, persistent bloating is a symptom frequently reported by ovarian cancer patients, while unexplained weight loss without dietary change can be an early sign of digestive cancers or cancer that has spread to the liver.

Why early detection matters

Cancer is among the leading causes of death worldwide, yet outcomes improve significantly when the disease is caught at an early stage. Many symptoms overlap with common, benign conditions, which is why medical consultation is essential whenever multiple signs appear together or persist over time.

Pain patterns that can point to specific cancers

Pain is a common cancer symptom, often caused by tumors pressing on nerves, bones, or organs. It can also result from treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation. Because pain is a frequent complaint across many conditions, identifying its specific pattern and location is essential.

A persistent cough or chest pain that radiates to the shoulder or arms may indicate lung cancer or leukemia. Pelvic or abdominal cramping can be linked to ovarian cancer or an enlarged spleen caused by leukemia. Back pain or discomfort in the lower right side may signal liver cancer, or breast cancer that has spread to the spine or ribs.

Heavy or unusually painful periods, or bleeding between periods, can be a sign of endometrial or uterine cancer — a symptom that is often attributed to hormonal fluctuations and delayed in investigation. Ongoing stomach cramps or digestive issues that do not resolve may indicate colorectal cancer.

Swelling of facial features — puffiness or redness around the face — can also occur with lung cancer, as tumors may block blood flow to the head. This symptom, alongside sores or lumps on the skin that do not heal, such as bleeding sores or crusty growths, can indicate skin cancer.
