📌 Assassination of Charlie Kirk: What We Know About the Shooter, Whose Wanted Notice Has Just Been Released

On Wednesday, Kirk was shot and killed on the campus of Utah Valley University during a public event. Investigators are now focusing on the mysterious gunman, though the FBI is releasing information sparingly as a nationwide manhunt unfolds.
Who is the shooter?
The suspect’s identity is still unknown. Surveillance footage shows a man, dressed like a student, fleeing from a rooftop after the shooting. Authorities reported finding a palm print, a forearm print, and a shoe print.
Utah police chief Beau Mason confirmed they had “good video footage” tracing the suspect’s movements—from his arrival on campus, to the rooftop where he fired the fatal shot, and then fleeing into a nearby neighborhood.
The FBI published the first photos of the suspect: a man wearing a baseball cap, dark sunglasses, and a long-sleeved black T-shirt with a design. In one image, he appears to be climbing a staircase. Investigators say he was recorded ascending stairs to reach the rooftop from which the shot was fired.
Mason added the suspect “blended in well with a university environment” and “appeared to be college-aged.”
What weapon was used?
Only one shot was fired—from about 130 meters away—striking Kirk in the neck and killing him instantly. Authorities later recovered what they believe to be the murder weapon: a high-caliber Mauser 30-06 bolt-action rifle, an older model popular among hunters, found in a wooded area near campus.
Several rounds and an empty casing were discovered, and the rifle is now being analyzed by the ATF in West Virginia. So far, no ownership link has been established.
Bolt-action rifles, though slower to fire than semi-automatics, are known for their precision. The single, accurate shot from more than 100 meters suggests the shooter was no novice.
Investigators also noted that the distance and style of the attack echoed last year’s assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania. The loud gunshot, captured by multiple phones, further confirmed the use of a rifle, though the exact caliber of the fatal bullet has not been disclosed.
A nationwide manhunt is now underway.
