Scratches on glasses are a common frustration for anyone who wears them daily. Whether it’s from accidentally dropping them, improper cleaning, or simply everyday wear and tear, these tiny marks can severely impact your vision. While many assume replacement is the only solution, there are several clever at-home remedies that can make a big difference. Here are five tried-and-true methods to reduce or even eliminate scratches from your lenses—saving you both time and money.
1. Baking Soda

Baking soda is mildly abrasive, making it perfect for polishing out light scratches. Mix one tablespoon of baking soda with one teaspoon of water to form a thick paste. Apply it to the lens using your finger or a cotton pad, gently rubbing in a circular motion for 10–15 seconds. Rinse thoroughly with cold water and dry with a microfiber cloth.
Tip: Always use a microfiber cloth for drying to avoid adding new scratches during the process.
2. Baby Oil

Baby oil works as a filler for shallow scratches, creating a smoother surface. Apply a single drop directly on the affected area and rub gently with a soft, clean cloth. Wipe off excess oil and check your progress under light. Repeat if needed.
3. Toothpaste

Non-gel toothpaste (avoid whitening or extra-strength versions) contains fine polishing agents that can reduce scratch visibility. Dab a small amount onto the scratched lens and use a cotton swab or microfiber cloth to buff it in circles. After a minute, rinse off and dry the lens.
Important: Always check with your optician before using this method on coated lenses, as it may affect anti-glare or blue-light filters.
4. Wood Furniture Polish

Products like Pledge aren’t just for tables—they can mask surface scratches on your lenses. Spray a small amount on a soft cloth, not directly onto the lens, and buff gently. The polish fills in imperfections and adds shine, temporarily improving clarity.
