After Wisdom Tooth Extraction: Recovery and Risks
What are the risks? “For most people, wisdom tooth removal doesn’t lead to any lasting complications,” reassures the dentist.
The main risk is dry socket: this inflammation of the tooth socket happens if the blood clot fails to form. It causes intense pain lasting 3 to 5 days. “Taking antibiotics before and after the operation helps reduce this risk,” the expert adds.
Another, much rarer, complication involves nerve or sinus injury when the teeth are close to the lower alveolar nerve or the sinuses. “This may cause slight numbness in the lip (paresthesia) for a few days, or trigger sinusitis,” says Dr. Binhas.
Post-op advice. “After the procedure, it’s common to see some minor bleeding, lip cracks, or bruising on the cheeks,” the dentist notes.
Avoid mouthwash if you have bleeding, as this could dislodge the blood clot and delay healing. Applying ice, wrapped in a cloth, to your cheek can help reduce swelling.
Stick to soft foods—like applesauce or yogurt—for a few days and stay well hydrated. It’s crucial not to smoke (as this slows healing) and to rest for at least 24 hours.
