People from Chicago — or even “Chicago-adjacent” — can’t help but say they’re from Chicago because the city carries weight, identity, and pride. Growing up in northwest Indiana meant living under Chicago’s influence — news, sports, food, and culture. Saying “Indiana” doesn’t resonate, but saying “Chicago” instantly connects. After studying, working, and truly living there, the city became part of who you are. For many, claiming Chicago isn’t just geography — it’s identity, character, and story.
It seems it tends to depend on which neighborhood has more locals vs transplants. Which neighborhoods should I look at if I’m wanting more authentic people?
