Most people don’t realize that refrigerators can become a serious hazard after years of use. If not properly maintained, certain warning signs can escalate into overheating—or even a dangerous explosion.

Refrigerators Can Explode After Long-Term Use If You’re Not Careful

Refrigerators used for many years may develop hidden problems that could eventually lead to an explosion. Without proper attention and care, these issues pose a serious risk to your household.

1. Compressor Runs Continuously Without Shutting Off

If the compressor never stops running, several causes may be at play: a lack or overcharge of refrigerant gas, high ambient temperatures forcing the fridge to overwork, a defective thermostat, or even the internal light remaining on at all times. Frequent door openings can also contribute.

Poor ventilation is another factor—blocked airflow, a damaged or loose door seal, or overloading the fridge with too much food can all cause the compressor to work non-stop and overheat.

2. Strange Noises Coming from the Compressor

Larger refrigerators tend to be louder, but some sounds should never be ignored:

  • Popping or thudding before shutting down: Often due to loose screws in the cooling system. Unplug the fridge, remove the screws, insert washers or padding, then tighten securely.
  • Buzzing or vibrating (“re re” sound): This usually indicates misaligned parts. Check if the compressor mounting pins have shifted and secure them properly.

3. Excessive Heat on Both Sides of the Fridge

Mistake #5: Almost everyone

If your refrigerator feels hot along the sides, it may be too close to walls or objects that block ventilation. The condenser coils, often placed on the sides, release heat as the refrigerant circulates. Without proper clearance, heat builds up—potentially leading to overheating or explosion.

4. Smelling Gas Near the Refrigerator

A refrigerant leak or low gas level can prevent cooling. If you detect a gas smell, call a technician immediately. Ignoring this issue may result in fire or explosion. Prompt servicing is crucial to avoid major hazards.

Important Safety Tips When Using a Refrigerator

  • Keep distance from stoves: Never place your fridge next to a cooking stove or direct flame. Leave at least 10–15 cm of space from walls and avoid direct sunlight.
  • Avoid nearby heat sources: Do not place the refrigerator near gas tanks, ovens, microwaves, or generators as these increase fire risk.
  • Keep away from damp areas: Excess moisture can rust the gas cylinder casing and lead to leaks.
  • Do not store items on top of the fridge: Added weight and clutter reduce ventilation and may increase risks.
  • Avoid freezing glass bottles with alcohol or carbonated drinks: They can easily burst inside the freezer.
