Is This Viral Image of European Leaders at the White House Real?

A Strange Scene That Never Happened

On August 18, U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and top European leaders to the White House. Soon after, a photo circulated widely on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. It appeared to show Emmanuel Macron, Ursula von der Leyen, Keir Starmer, and Friedrich Merz sitting gloomily in a hallway outside the Oval Office.

The caption read: “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Another user commented: “The soft power of the most powerful nation—the EU presidents waiting like students before meeting their principal.” Even Donald Trump Jr. reposted it on Instagram.

But fact-checkers quickly determined the photo was not authentic.

Clear Signs of AI Manipulation

A closer look reveals odd details:

  • Extra legs appear between Emmanuel Macron and Ursula von der Leyen, unattached to any body.

  • The facial features are somewhat recognizable but distorted—typical of AI imagery.

  • Multiple AI detection tools confirmed the use of generative models.

In addition, clothing details don’t match real footage of the Washington summit. For example, Ursula von der Leyen was never seen wearing the green outfit visible in the fake photo.

Posted Before the Actual Summit

A reverse image search traced the viral photo back to August 17—a day before the summit even took place. The original caption read: “What they imagine VS what will happen.” This proves the image was fabricated and circulated before the real meeting.
