She was once America’s queen of daytime TV, but Ellen DeGeneres says Donald Trump pushed her to leave the country altogether. Now living quietly in the English countryside with her wife, she insists she’s not coming back.

While many celebrities criticized Donald Trump during his presidency, few were as outspoken as Ellen DeGeneres. Now, the comedian and former talk show icon claims she has left the United States entirely because of him.

The 67-year-old confirmed over the weekend that she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, have permanently relocated to the UK, citing Trump’s renewed political relevance as the breaking point.

“We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in,’” DeGeneres revealed at a Cheltenham speaking event. “And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.’”

Now settled in the Cotswolds, Ellen says the couple has embraced a “simpler” life far removed from the country that made her a global star.

“Everything here is just better,” she said, praising the UK for its politeness, fresh air, and the way animals are treated compared to the U.S.

Still, her comments sparked debate, with some questioning why a celebrity whose fame and fortune were built on American audiences would turn her back on the country over the outcome of an election.

At the event, Ellen also expressed concerns over U.S. debates surrounding same-sex marriage, warning she and Portia might remarry in Britain if protections were rolled back.

“The Baptist Church in America is trying to reverse gay marriage,” she said. “They’re trying to literally stop it from happening in the future.”

In reality, the Supreme Court has not overturned marriage equality, and even Trump-appointed justices have upheld key LGBTQ+ rulings. Critics argue Ellen’s remarks reflect a pattern of exaggeration that has defined much of her public messaging in recent years.
