OREM, Utah (TNND) — The suspect in the fatal shooting of political activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University has been arrested after being turned in by his own family, Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed.

“We got him,” Cox announced Thursday.

The suspect, identified as Tyler Robinson, allegedly confessed to a family member, who then contacted law enforcement through a close friend. According to sources, Robinson admitted the crime to his father, who restrained him until authorities arrived.

Former President Donald Trump also confirmed the arrest during a Friday appearance on Fox & Friends, praising Kirk as “the finest person” and expressing his hope that Robinson faces the death penalty.

Federal and state officials had released photos and video of Robinson on Thursday as part of their investigation, which generated over 7,000 leads. Authorities later recovered a high-powered bolt-action rifle near the scene.

Kirk, co-founder and CEO of Turning Point USA, was shot in the neck in what police described as a “targeted attack” while speaking on campus. Videos captured chaos as attendees screamed and fled while Kirk collapsed.

Governor Cox and President Trump both signaled support for the death penalty in this case. Meanwhile, Trump announced that Kirk will posthumously receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

Kirk’s body was transported aboard Air Force Two from Utah to Arizona on Thursday, accompanied by Vice President JD Vance and his wife. Funeral arrangements have not yet been released.

“Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty, and an inspiration to millions,” Trump said. “His voice and courage will continue to live on.”
